Common PC Security problems

by Dawid Luberda 2008-01-16 - Internet Security

Infestation

We all know the feeling.  You boot up your computer and it just sits  there waiting for a program to load...... Finally it loads and you fall asleep waiting for it to boot.  That is a definite sign of something radically wrong with your computer!

Malware

You can get a program  to remove it all and while running the detection it comes up so choked with malware it is a wonder it starts at all.  So you follow the directions and clean it all out and re-boot and  you have your old friend running like new again.  For about a month.  And then it starts again.   Malware is a fact of life, it is out there  and they number in the hundred-thousands.  It is almost guarenteed your PC will catch something somewhere. If you are lucky when your machine slows down you will still be able to connect to the Internet and find a solution to the problem.  But what is really needed is a long term way to prevent your machine from getting these bugs.

How do I protect my computer?

There are things you can  before finding and downloading some protection for your PC.  Your Internet surfing, or the way you surf and where you go can invite viruses right in to your computer. Hopefully the few things I can suggest will reduce your chances of being bugged.

·         One of the first things you need to do is get a firewall. There are free ones on the web that work great, and windows has it’s own built in.  But I recommend more than just the windows firewall. Think of the firewall like a fence around your computer, it doesnt let the intruders into your computer from the beginning, thus cutting down the number of uninvited bugs. I really like  Zonealarm you can get the basic for free!

·         Update your virus program so it has the latest updates and run it religiously!  Dont go spend a fortune on it , you can get a great free one from AVG I have run it for three years and have had no problems  OR bugs.

·         The other way you can get malware is if you download a lot of stuff and sometimes it is attached to the file you have downloaded.  AVG has an option to scan it before you install it to let you know if you have a bug.

·         Get some anti spyware software!  Sometimes it will catch things that the other two programs don’t.  Ad Aware is free and a good program to use.

·         Run your spyware religiously!  Along with the virus software if you use the computer a lot then a couple times a week should be ok. While you are at it,  run your defrag program and clear the caches .  You will find your machine runs much better.

·         Update your windows regularly from the site do NOT take anything you get in your e mail!!  This will put the updates for security flaws in windows  on your computer.
